The painting is sealed by Ota Saburo (1884-1969), a student of the early western-style oil painter Kuroda Seiki and a master in his own right. Perhaps Ota's most famous work is the series of images in his Taisho-era 2 volume book, ASA GIRI. In this hanging scroll his rendition of a tile baker and her kiln is lively and colorful.
